Ferrari 250 GTO

El Ferrari 250 GTO es un automóvil deportivo y de competición construido por Ferrari entre los años 1962 y 1964, es considerado como uno de los mejores automóviles de alto rendimiento construido.

El número 250 hace referencia a la capacidad en centímetros cúbicos, de cada cilindro del motor. Las siglas GTO significan en italiano: «Gran Turismo Omologata» (Gran Turismo Homologado).

Los Ferrari 250 GTO fueron diseñados para competir en la categoría GT. Eran una evolución ortodoxa de los Ferrari 250 GT SWB. El ingeniero Giotto Bizzarrini tomó el chasis del Ferrari 250 GT SWB y lo acopló con un motor V12 de 3,0 litros del Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.

Como en ese tiempo, debido a problemas y desacuerdos internos dentro de Ferrari, el ingeniero Bizzarrini y otros ingenieros se vieron obligados a salir de la marca, el desarrollo y terminación del proyecto GTO fue entregado al ingeniero Mauro Forghieri y al diseñador Sergio Scaglietti. La carrocería, ahora más ancha fue perfeccionada en la prueba de túnel y de la pista de viento.

El resto del coche era una presentación equilibrada de la tecnología de Ferrari de los años 60. Contaba con un bastidor tubular soldado a mano, suspensión delantera de doble horquilla, frenos de disco y ruedas diseñadas por Borrani. La caja de engranajes era de cinco velocidades y eran un paso adelante, si no realmente revolucionario.

El interior era austero hasta el extremo en el que un velocímetro no era considerado necesario para el tablero de instrumentos.

Según la FIA, encargada de regular los vehículos de competición, cien ejemplares de un vehículo deben ser construidos para ser homologados en la clase GT (en comparación con la clase de prototipo, menos estricta). Sin embargo, Ferrari construyó solamente 36 unidades del 250 GTO (30 de los vehículos «normales», tres con los motores 4 litros 330 (a veces llamados los «330 GTO» pero correctamente 330 LMB), y tres vehículos «tipo 64» con la carrocería revisada) pero sin embargo el 250 fue permitido para competir en la clase de GT.

El coche debutó en las 12 Horas de Sebring en 1962, conducido por el piloto estadounidense Phil Hill y el piloto belga Olivier Gendebien. Aunque estuvo con problemas técnicos, terminó segundo, detrás de un Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.

El 250 GTO era un coche de carreras excepcionalmente capaz. A la hora de su introducción era (dependiendo de la opción de engranajes) muy probablemente el coche más rápido en cualquier pista de la categoría.

El GTO ganó el campeonato del mundo durante tres años seguidos: 1962, 1963, y 1964. Gracias a su potente motor de 3 L y 302 CV, la velocidad máxima del 250 GTO es de 280 km/h.

Un Ferrari 250 GTO, se ha convertido en el coche más caro del mundo. Ha sido vendido en subasta por 28,2 millones de euros, desbancando así a un Bugatti de 1936 que alcanzó hace dos años la cifra de 25 millones de euros.

El deportivo subastado lleva el número 3505 grabado en su bastidor tubular primorosamente soldado a mano y destinado a la competición. Solo se construyeron 36 unidades de las que sobreviven alrededor de una docena. Fue la sexta unidad en salir de la fábrica la que compró el piloto de Fórmula 1 Stirling Moss para correr en las 24 Horas de Le Mans de 1962. Fue pintado en verde manzana, que conserva, color original de la escudería del piloto británico, que no pudo conducirlo debido a que sufrió un accidente unos días antes de la prueba francesa.

Desde 1962 hasta 2000, el coche ha tenido ocho propietarios. El último, el holandés Erik Heerema, que pagó casi siete millones de euros. El anterior, el japonés Yoshiho Matsuda, lo había comprado poco antes por la misma cantidad.

El modelo 250 GTO es el más cotizado de la casa italiana y en febrero de este año otra unidad cambió de manos por la friolera de 20,4 millones de euros. Desde 2008 se han producido varias operaciones de compraventa sobre estos coches con facturas superiores a los 14 millones por unidad.

El coche estaba disponible en anamera.com, portal especializado en vehículos de colección. De esta forma el GTO que comprara Moss en 1962 se ha convertido en el coche más caro de la historia, desbancando a un rarísimo Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic (1936) del que solo se hicieron tres unidades y que se subastó en mayo de 2010 por una cifra no revelada, pero que estaba ligeramente por encima de los 25 millones de euros.
